Should antiquities from other countries be returned to them if they ask for them back?
“Egypt’s head of antiquities will drop a demand for the permanent return of the Rosetta Stone if the British Museum agrees to loan it out, he says.
The Stone – a basalt slab dating back to 196BC which was key to the modern deciphering of hieroglyphics – has been at the museum since 1802.
Dr Zahi Hawass has long called for foreign museums to return six of the most prized antiquities of Egypt.”

“The Rosetta Stone, discovered in Egypt by French soldiers in 1799 and given to the English under the terms of the Treaty of Alexandria two years later, is one of the most high-profile items Dr Hawass has previously demanded be returned.
What makes it so significant is that it contains the same text in Egyptian hieroglyphs, another ancient Egyptian script and in ancient Greek.
The presence of that Greek translation meant that for the first time it was possible to use the stone to decipher and understand hieroglyphs.”
The rosetta stone rightfully belongs to the heirs of the Ptolemy Pharaohs, following the logic of Hawass. That means that they go back to Greece.
The first Ptolemy was one of Alexander the Great’s Generals who seized Egypt and anointed himself and his heirs Pharaoh. The stone was made in the reign of the Greeks, so it is theirs.
Don’t agree with that? How about to Italy, as by right of conquest it belongs to the heirs of Augustus Caesar. Don’t agree with the right of conquest, can the UK then claim Back All of Anjou and Aquitaine?
If that is not right then how about the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) who owned it during their rule, they surely must have a prior claim to modern Egypt.
The guy is a chancer. Even he knows this with his offer of ‘We’ll drop our claim if you lend it us for a short while’. Yes, right, you borrow it and the UK will never see it again, like the Greeks with their similar claim on the Elgin Marbles, which were legally purchased off of the legal government of Greece at the time – oops, back to the Ottomans again! Once they are gone, they are gone.
All the world can visit and see these treasures in the British Museum, they are free for study, they are safe and they are with their legal owners.
As for his claim to other antiquities, what next? The return of the Pharaohic Empire? The man is not real.
